Personal Testimony & Call to Ministry
I was born into a Christian home and have known Christ for as long as I can recall. For almost as long, I have had a love for and felt a call to the political arena - particularly to defend the cause of the unborn. While my father was somewhat politically active, the pull to politics was more than mere familial activity, it was innate. My father taught me to question things, and so I did - often. Perhaps most deeply I questioned how a civilized society could be so apathetic toward the slaughter of thousands of babies. Combined with my passion for politics, at (approx.) twelve years old my father asked if I wanted to be president - I said no, I would rather be a Supreme Court Justice so I can be part of the overturning of Roe v. Wade. In ninth grade, I took debate and my topic was an easy choice: I chose to argue for defenseless babies in the womb. After hearing my presentation, my teacher, an admitted abortion-rights advocate, right then and there without reading a single line in my report, wrote "A+" on it.
Ever since, it has been my greatest joy and privilege to advocate for the most vulnerable in our society. As an undergraduate student I studied Political Science and History at the University of Minnesota, where I also earned a master’s degree in Public Policy. At age 26 I was elected to the Minnesota State House of Representatives, where I was honored to serve two terms, exiting elected office in 2018. My primary focuses as a legislator were life issues (fighting for the unborn), combating sex-trafficking, and advocating for a fairer property tax system.
On life-oriented bills specifically, I was the primary author of the following:
-
The Born Alive Infant Protection Act, which provided penalties to any abortion provider that failed to care for an infant born alive from a failed abortion as they would care for any other infant. By prayer, fasting, the help of many others, and God's grace - this was signed into law by one of the most democratic governors MN had ever seen - a former Senator who actually voted against similar legislation while serving in the U.S. Senate.
-
During my second legislative session, I authored legislation to prohibit the University of MN from trafficking in aborted baby body parts.
-
Working with Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life, I authored legislation to require ultrasounds be performed prior to abortions.
In the midst of my political activity, God interrupted and I met my husband, Alistair - a Brit who loves the Lord and (at the time) served as pastor in London. After lots of prayer, I gave up what I felt was my calling to elected office to enter what God made clear is my greater calling - being a wife and mother. Indeed, the greatest privilege, joy and challenge of my life has come in seeking to raise our children (Alexander Gabriel, Aiden Joshua James, Ezri Elizabeth, and, as of this writing, #4 in the womb!) in the ways of the Lord. Even so, in the midst of this season of life, by God's kindness and sovereignty, the political calling never diminished. It simply changed form: For four years, I worked as the Director of Public Policy for Right To Life UK, where I networked with those elected to office as Members of Parliament, as well as those within the House of Lords, to defend the unborn and champion the moms and dads that chose life.
Current Ministry Role
After moving back to the U.S., the Lord then led the way for me to work with Liberty Counsel Action - a non-profit law and policy education, training and advocacy organization that seeks to advance religious freedom, the sanctity of human life, the family, responsible government, national security, and support for Israel at the federal, state, and local levels. Though this is not a season of life to serve in elected office myself (3 toddlers, soon to be 4!), I am blessed to be able to advocate for life and other kingdom-values at the highest levels of government, effectively walking out what I believe is God's call on my life: To be a culture changer, going before governing officials and speaking God's truth. Most recently, I was honored to serve as the primary author of an extensive white paper exposing the horror of the 700,000 aborted babies from chemical abortions that are being flushed into home toilets and placed into our water system. Having had three of my own children, the atrocity of the abortion industry is even more poignant now than when I first argued for life back in my ninth-grade debate class.
Ministry Vision
More than words can say, I am honored to continue the fight for life, to see this world be a better place for my kids - and all kids - to grow up in. To see this achieved, I believe my part is to:
-
Pray - for my colleagues, government officials, and the church; that all would see as God sees and place the utmost value on the things He values (life chief among them).
-
Bring Awareness - to the horror of chemical abortion (among other governmental failings).
-
Act - research, write, and engage with government officials on the most pressing policy matters of our time.
In short, my mission is to engage with government by advocating for the unborn and vulnerable in our society, fueled by prayer and the support of my loving husband, who has laid down his life to care for our young family.
